5th August 2010: The number of riders registered for the main league at the Newcastle-under-Lyme Track League in Staffordshire has now gone over 100 for the season which is a 10 year record.

With four more leagues to go this number could well increase. The event held on the 5th August was a cracker with 21 riders in the A Class event producing some great racing.

The best race of the night was the 10 mile scratch. The A class riders started 1 ½ laps down on the B however the pace was so high in the A group that they bought the race together after 16 laps of the 40 lap race. The pace stayed high with only four B class riders finishing the race. In the sprint for the line Richard Prince, Planet X took the tight finish from Lewis Balyckyi second and Luke Boulton third, both of Team Willis CHH RT. The time was also respectable with the clock stopping at 21.05.

In the other A Class events Richard Prince added the devil to his 10 mile win. In the opening 8 lap scratch league leader Matthew Rotherham, Sportcity Velo took the win and the Course de Primes was taken by Robert Lambton.

In the B Class events the top point’s scorer was Sam Birchall of Lyme RC. His best performance came in winning the 10 mile scratch along with second places in the 8 lap scratch, devil and points race. Neil Cummins won the opening 8 lap scratch and devil to score well on the night. Special mention should also go to Sarah Byrne, Motorpoint Marshells-Pasta who scored 7 points with a win in the point’s race and second place in the 10 mile.

With an increase in lady riders a scratch race was inserted on the programme with seven taking part. In the dash to the line Lisa Daley, Sportcity Velo took the win from Sarah Byrne and Hannah Layland, VC St Raphael.

The latest round of the Neil Potter Handicap series saw a blanket finish from the 14 rider field with mid field marker and now new league leader Phil Houlton, Newcastle RC 2001 taking the victory from long marker Megan Boyd, Sportcity Velo.

The youth race field was down this week due to the holiday season and a number of riders competing in Holland at various youth races. The top points scorers of the night were league leader Joel Partington and Sean Mayer both of Lyme RC who scored seven points. Joel won the 6 lap scratch and Sean the 200m time trail. The best finish of the night was the block handicap where 12 years old Becky Gray, Lyme RC took a great win from fellow long marker India Penrice, Sportcity Velo.

In the Freewheelers League a good turnout of riders rode some competitive races in each category. In Group 1 Joel Partington, Lyme RC top scored with 10 points and he now has an unassailable lead in this league. In Group 2 Liam Zwetschnikow ,Lyme RC also scored 10 points to extend his overall league lead. Group 3 saw Andrew Williams score 9 points which enabled him to retain his 4th place overall and close in on 3rd place.

Go-Ride Activites

George Shaw

The sessions will be aimed at children who cannot yet ride the track, with mainly the under 10s targetted, but also any older riders who need some extra bike skills before riding on the track.

The Go-Ride activities will include riding around cones, under limbo bars and various other skill based routes. We feel that this will attract a number of riders who compete at the Freewheelers League

Riders will be asked to bring their own bikes which can be MTB, Road or BMX along with a suitable helmet. The cost for the session will be £2 and will start at 6.30pm lasting around 1 hour to 1 hour 30 mins
