Day Six: Drama in Zurich

Franco Marvulli

The final night of the Zurich 6D was full of drama as Bruno Risi and Franco Marvulli fought back in spectacular style to take the victory in front of their home crowd.

When the final 60 Km race started the Swiss team was still one lap behind not only Keisse/Bartko but also the composite team of Danny Stam and Michael Mørkøv.

Throughout the race it looked more and more impossible that they would draw level as every attack from Risi – Marvulli was immediately counter-attacked by the two other teams, riding a splendid "tandem".

If Stam – Mørkøv had been content with second place, it might have been impossible for Risi – Marvulli to change things, but in the end the ambitious Dutchman and his even more ambitious young partner from Denmark wanted to try for more, and the fight between them and Keisse – Bartko presented the platform for Risi – Marvulli.

With just 17 laps (3.4 Km) Marvulli attack with all the power he had left in his body and with the superior support of his partner Bruno Risi they managed to close the gap and win the lap, which brought them level with the two other teams – and made them winners on points of 51st 6-Days of Zurich.

Heading into the final night of racing, technically anything can happen, but we shall probably see the dominate team Keisse/Bartko take a well deserved victory.

Day Four: Risi/Marvulli Fight Back

Franco Marvulli

Bruno Risi and Franco Marvulli have managed to get on level terms with leaders Iljo Keisse and Robert Bartko in the overall classification.

The Swiss team is now lead on points, but with Keisse and Bartko only 16pts from a bonus lap they could easily regain the lead tomorrow.

The new team Stam and Mørkøv preserved their third place overall with their two closest rivals Aeschbach/Villa and Lampater/Grasmann one lap behind them.

To night the great "Silvester Evening" in Zurich. The race will be stopped around mid-night but after a Happy New Year-break the riders must go back on their bikes for a 100 laps Madison.

Day Three: Keisse/Bartko Still Lead

Iljo Keisse

The 3rd evening of the Zurich 6-Days started with the withdrawal of Danish rider Alex Rasmussen had and Dutch star Robert Slippens, Rasmussen has been suffering with illness all week, whereas Slippens had severe saddle sore.

Consequently their respective team-mates, Michael Mørkøv and Danny Stam joined forces to make a very effective team on the third night of competition.

The first of the evening’s two events (30 Km) were not dominated by the top-teams with Alexander Aeschbach enjoying a moment of victory in front of this home-crowd by winning the event ahead of Grasmann – Lampater and the still very courageous Ratajczyk – Pliuschkin.

The second event (50 Km) was again a bitter fight between the two top-teams, Keisse/Bartko who had preserved their one lap lead, and they dominated Risi/Marvulli, putting them under heavy pressure during the last 50 laps.

However towards the end of the race an attempt to increase their lead went wrong as the World Madison Champions counter-attacked to win the event, but Keisse/Bartko did enough to maintain their one lap advantage.

Overall in Zurich after 3rd day
1 Iljo Keisse (BEL) – Robert Bartko (GER), 227 p., at 1 lap: 2 Bruno Risi – Franco Marvulli (SUI), 260 p., at 2 laps: 3 Danny Stam – Michael Mørkøv (DEN), 135 p., 4 Leif Lampater – Christian Grasmann (GER), 111 p., at 4 laps: 5 Alexander Aeschbach (SUI) – Marco Villa (ITA), 156 p., at 6 laps: 6 Andreas Beikirch – Andreas Müller (GER), 76 p., at 7 laps: 7 Rafal Ratajczyk – Alexandr Pliuschin (MOL), 90 p., at 12 laps: 8 René Schibli – Maxime Bally (SUI), 108 p., at 17 laps: 9 Bruno Menzi (SUI) – Stefan Löffler (GER), 63 p., 10 Beni Baumgartner – Tobias Baumgartner (SUI), 41 p., at 20 laps: 11 Miguel Alzamora – Toni Tauler (ESP), 29 p., at 22 laps: 12 Martin Elmiger (SUI) – Robert Bengsch (GER), 39 p., at 26 laps: 13 Gregory Rast (SUI) – Gerd Dörich (GER), 27 p.
Abandoned: Alex Rasmussen and Robert Slippens. New team: Danny Stam (NED) – Michael Mørkøv (DEN).

Day Two: Risi/Marvulli fight Back

Franco Marvulli

At the end of the second day of the Zurich Six Day only three teams are still in the chase for overall victory. Risi/Marvulli, Keisse/Bartko and Stam/Slippens are proving to be far stronger than their rivals, but that doesn’t mean that we didn’t see other good performances in Zurich yesterday.

Aeschbach/Villa, Lampater/Grasmann and Beikirch/Müller are the best of the next, perhaps not so surprisingly, but we note with respect a 7th place overall for the Polish-Moldavian team Ratajczyk/Pliuschin and courageous efforts also from young Swiss riders as Schibli/Bally and Baumgartner brothers.

The first race on Friday evening (30 Km) was won by Stam and Slippens ahead of Risi – Marvulli and Keisse – Bartko, those three teams again ending one lap or more ahead of the rest.

The second event (50 Km) turned out to be a hard one, and for a long time Risi/Marvulli were one lap behind after Keisse/Bartko and Stam/Slippens angered the home crowd by combining their efforts to put the favourites in difficulty.

However, Risi and Marvulli and the World Champions for a reason and to the delight of the crowd, fighting back to win the race.

Overall in Zurich after 2nd day
1 Iljo Keisse (BEL) – Robert Bartko (GER), 154 p., at 1 lap: 2 Bruno Risi – Franco Marvulli (SUI), 170 p., 3 Danny Stam – Robert Slippens (NED), 128 p., at 3 laps: 4 Alexander Aeschbach (SUI) – Marco Villa (ITA), 116 p., 5 Leif Lampater – Christian Grasmann (GER), 74 p., at 4 laps: 6 Andreas Beikirch – Andreas Müller (GER), 54 p., at 6 laps: 7 Rafal Ratajczyk – Alexandr Pliuschin (MOL), 59 p., at 8 laps: 8 René Schibli – Maxime Bally (SUI), 61 p., at 11 laps: 9 Bruno Menzi (SUI) – Stefan Löffler (GER), 46 p., 10 Beni Baumgartner – Tobias Baumgartner (SUI), 29 p., at 13 laps: 11 Miguel Alzamora – Toni Tauler (ESP), 14 p., at 16 laps: 12 Martin Elmiger (SUI) – Robert Bengsch (GER), 23 p., at 18 laps: 13 Gregory Rast (SUI) – Gerd Dörich (GER), 11 p.
Neutralised: Alex Rasmussen – Michael Mørkøv (DEN).

Day One: Keisse/Bartko take the Lead

Iljo Keisse

Tonight saw the 6-Days of Zurich start in the old Hallen-Stadion. It was the 51st in Zurich but only the second in the new era, starting last year thanks mainly to former Swiss World Champions Max Hürzeler and Urs Freuler.

Leading after the first evening is the Belgium-German combination of Iljo Keisse and Robert Bartko, already winners in Amsterdam and Ghent this winter and seen as the great rivals of Bruno Risi and Franco Marvulli.

Keisse – Bartko leads with one lap to six teams with Risi – Marvulli in 2nd place with the greatest amount of points.
