Krupeckaite's Golden Sprint Comeback

World Championship Silver Medallist Simona Krupeckaite made her first appearance at the 2008/09 UCI Track Cycling World Cup Series today in style at the Cali World Cup in Columbia

The Lithuanian topped the 200m TT Qualification times for the Women's Sprint with an impressive 11.052s, 0.2s faster than second placed Lulu Zheng of China

France's Clara Sanchez, who was also making her first appearance since the Beijing Olympics and with a Personal Best 200m time of 11.314s she is another rider to watch out for in 2009

Round One saw Krupeckaite effortlessly beat Columbia's Maritza Ceballos in 11.849s, with Zheng and Sanchez also progressing through

Simona then had to face home favourite Diana Maria Garcia Orrego who despite having the backing of the Cali crowd couldn't quite manage to derail the Lithuanian's comeback as she went out in 11.532s and 11.197s

Zheng faced up and coming Aussie rider Kaarle McCulloch in her Quarter Final, however she had no trouble making the Semi's in straight heats, as did Sanchez who saw off her team-mate Sandie Clair.

Also through was 500m Time Trial World Champion Lisandra Guerra of Cuba who beating German Miriam Welte in straight heats

The Semi-Final's saw Krupeckaite face Guerra, with the former after revenge for the 500m TT Worlds result when Guerra beat her by 0.045s to take the Gold.

In the first heat Krueckaite was obviously very wary of the threat that the Cuban possessed, leaving her plenty of room before coming through in 11.683s to take heat one, before dishing out the same result in heat two to make the final

Sanchez upset the odds as she knocked out Lulu Zheng in two very tactical encounters to make a mouth watering final against Krupeckaite

In the Bronze Medal Ride off Guerra kept it tactical against Zheng, using her experience to great advantage as she left the Chinese girl with no answer to her acceleration to take the Bronze medal in two straight heats

Krupeckaite beat Sanchez in the final to take a well deserved Gold Medal

Bronze went to the French trio of Mickael Bourgain, Kevin Sireau and Didier Henriette, of which Bourgain and Sireau were making their first appearances since the Beijing Olympics Games in August.
