Cataluyna Team Continue to Improve

The Catalunya Track Cycling Team continued to grow and accrue significant successes in 2009. The team had an excellent year claiming six World Championship medals (3 Silver, 3 Bronze), nineteen Spanish Championship titles and many victories in prestigious Track events across Europe.

Twenty-One year old Helena Casas is the team’s star rider demonstrated her progression within the sport with some great performances in 2009. Helena set new Spanish records for the 200m and 500m Time Trials clocking 11.611s and 35.376s.

Her best results of 2009 were at the Cali World Cup in Columbia where she finished sixth in the 500m TT and ninth in the Keirin.

The team’s other riders such as Itmar Esteban also had some successful results in 2009 with victory in the 3 Days of Aigle.

Spain’s new man one in the Team Sprint, Alfredo Moreno is also a member of the Cataluyna Track Cycling Team. At the Cali World Cup he produced the third fastest opening 250m in the Team Sprint which helped the Spanish trio gain sixth place in the competition.

Carlos Herrera, Sergi Escobar, Carlos Torrent are also members of the team who enjoyed a successful 2009.

The team aims to continue their successes of 2009 in 2010 with the aim to continue to develop the younger riders in the team who will go on to represent Spain at the London 2012 Olympics

El Catalunya Team valora positivament l´ any 2009 El projecte Catalunya Track Cycling Team segueix creixent i acumulant importants èxits, com els aconseguits en aquest 2009 que ara acaba, amb l'objectiu dels Jocs Olímpics i Paralímpics de 2012 a l'horitzó.

De camí cap a la fita olímpica de Londres, l'equip català ha signant un altre any excel·lent amb un balanç de resultats guarnit amb les sis medalles aconseguides als Campionats del Món de ciclisme adaptat (3 de plata i 3 de bronze), els sis rècords estatals en pista (cinc d'ells en disciplines olímpiques i paralímpiques) i les diverses victòries i posicions de podi aconseguides en prestigioses curses del calendari internacional, però també amb les 19 medalles sumades als diferents Campionats d'Espanya (13 d'or, 2 de plata i 4 de bronze), on els corredors i corredores de Catalunya Team van tornar a ser referent de la Federació Catalana.

L'activitat de Catalunya Track Cycling Team aquest 2009 s'ha dividit en tres capítols diferents: l'Equip Pista UCI, l'organització del Ciutat de Barcelona de pista, Copa d'Europa aquesta ocasió, i la nova secció de Ciclisme Adaptat, gràcies al suport i col·laboració d'entitats i empreses com Turisme de Catalunya, Consell Català de l'Esport, Ajuntament de Barcelona, Massi-Casa Masferrer, Inverse, Catlike, Mavic, Vittoria i Genesis Cycling.

L'equip UCI català, que ja és el degà entre els conjunts de la primera divisió del ciclisme en pista internacional (al costat del Cespa-Euskadi i el Hong Kong Pro Cycling) i la segona plantilla més jove amb poc més de 22 anys de mitjana, ha disputat carreres en deu països de tres continents, al llarg de l'any. Helena Casas, amb 21 anys d'edat, ha estat la gran protagonista de l'equip incrementant el seu ja ric palmarès amb importants resultats que continuen avalant la seva progressió, com els nous rècords estatals de 200 i 500 metres, amb 11”611 i 35”376, unes marques cada vegada més properes a la restringida elit femenina mundial i que l'han situat en diverses ocasions entre les deu millors corredores del planeta, com a la recent Copa del Món disputada a Cali, Colòmbia, on va acabar sisena dels 500 metres contrarellotge i novena al keirin. Però també a d'altres curses del calendari internacional, com als 3 Dies d'Aigle (Suïssa, a l'octubre), amb victòries en les proves de velocitat individual i 500 metres, al Gran Premi de Cottbus (Alemanya, juny), tercera al keirin, a la Copa d'Europa (Barcelona, setembre), quarta als 500 metres i sisena en velocitat, i al Campionat d'Europa absolut celebrat a Gant (Bèlgica, octubre), cinquena del torneig omnium de velocitat, a més de renovar els seus títols com a campiona d'Espanya elit en les tres disciplines individuals de velocitat femenina.

Quan els elit de l'equip: Itmar Esteban, Alfred Moreno, Adrià Sabaté (velocitat) i Carles Herrero (fons); destaquen èxits internacionals com la victòria d'Esteban en la cursa d'eliminació dels 3 Dies d'Aigle, on també va signar la tercera posició del torneig de keirin, la mateixa classificació obtinguda després en les "Revolution Series" de Manchester (Anglaterra, al novembre), tant al keirin com a la velocitat individual. A la Copa del Món, Itmar va aconseguir la seva millor classificació a Copenhague (Dinamarca, febrer), accedint a la semifinal del keirin on va ocupar la desena plaça final.

Mentrestant, Alfred Moreno va aconseguir en les "Revolution Series" britàniques el seu major èxit, arribant a la segona posició de la velocitat individual, per a certificar pocs dies després el seu gran nivell amb la tercera millor volta a la Copa del Món de Cali (desembre). Alfred va llançar allà al trio de la selecció espanyola fins a la sisena plaça de la velocitat per equips. Tots dos, Esteban i Moreno, també van aconseguir plegats el seu cinquè títol d'Espanya consecutiu d'aquesta disciplina de velocitat col.lectiva (sempre amb la companyia de José Antonio Escuredo), mentre es repartien tres medalles a nivell individual en aquests Campionats d'Espanya: Alfred plata i Itmar bronze al torneig de velocitat, més un altre bronze per a Esteban al keirin. També allà, a l'estatal de pista celebrat al febrer, a Palma, Carles Herrero sumava el seu primer or integrant la quarteta de la selecció catalana (al costat de Sergi Escobar, Antonio Miguel i Carles Torrent). Després, a l'octubre, Herrero i Adrià Sabaté coincidien a Bordeus per apuntar-se els seus millors resultats internacionals de l'any, amb motiu del Gran Premi "L'Humanité". Carles va ocupar el podi del torneig francès a les curses d'escratx, segon, i puntuació, tercer, mentre Sabaté, recuperat per a la pista després de quatre anys d'absència dels velòdroms, es feia amb la tercera plaça del keirin, davant les grans figures de l'exigent velocitat francesa.

La velocista Alba Díez i els fondistes Arantxa García i Sergi Carrere, tres joves promeses de 19 anys que ja han pogut debutar davant l'elit mundial de l'especialitat, van completar la plantilla 2009 del Equip UCI de Catalunya Team. Equip Paralímpic

D'altra banda, l'Equip de Ciclisme Adaptat de Catalunya Team, format per Raquel Acinas, Juan José Méndez i Ramon Álvarez, va culminar la seva primera campanya realitzant una brillant temporada amb l'obtenció de tres subcampionats del Món. Méndez es va penjar les medalles de plata entre la seva categoria LC4 en les proves de contrarellotge en carretera i persecució en pista, mentre Acinas es feia amb la de persecució entre les dones LC3. Entre tots dos també van sumar dos bronzes: Raquel en la prova en línia del Mundial de ruta celebrat a la localitat italiana de Bogogno, al setembre, i Juanjo al quilòmetre contrarellotge del Campionat de pista disputat a Manchester, al novembre, a més de quatre rècords d'Espanya en les disciplines de pista: 3.000 metres i quilòmetre (4'08”900 i 1'27”004), signats per Juanjo Méndez, i 3.000 i 500 metres (4'33"307 i 47"142), amb el segell de Raquel Acinas.

Però la temporada 2009 de paraciclisme va donar molt més de si amb diferents classificacions de privilegi per als dos ciclistes catalans, encara que entre tots els èxits destaca el triomf absolut d'Acinas al “Trofeu Internazionale” de Piacenza, Itàlia, una volta per etapes on la barcelonina es va imposar davant corredores amb menor discapacitat física que ella. La suma de tots els resultats de l'any van portar a la Raquel fins el número 1 del Rànquing UCI Internacional de la seva categoria LC3, pista i ruta, mentre Juanjo concloïa la temporada segon del rànquing de carretera i tercer al de pista. A nivell estatal, tots dos van obtenir el total de les vuit medalles d'or possibles als Campionats d'Espanya, línia i contrarellotge en carretera i persecució i quilòmetre (500 metres al cas femení), en pista, mentre Ramon Álvarez (LC3) es feia amb els bronzes de persecució i quilòmetre en pista, en aquella, la seva primera experiència al món de la competició.

Finalment, el Club Ciclista Catalunya Track Cycling Team va tornar de demostrar la seva capacitat organitzativa celebrant amb rotund èxit el III Trofeu Ciutat de Barcelona, única prova internacional del calendari espanyol de ciclisme en pista, i que aquest 2009 va servir per commemorar del 25 aniversari del Velòdrom Olímpic d'Horta, rebent el sobrenom de Copa d'Europa, on la selecció de Polònia es va coronar guanyadora.
