1st October 2010: As always with major international sporting events held in Asia, the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India will start next week amid controversy and doubts whether the event will actually commence.
There are fears over the safety of athletes from terrorist attacks after it was announced that the sacred holy site in Ayodhya is to be split between Hindus and Muslims. Officials fear the ruling will provoke attacks upon the Commonwealth Games from militant groups on both sides as they aim to awaken the outside world to their grievances. Organisers have assured each Commonwealth nation that India will be safe and the arrival of 200,000 extra security personnel has further re-assured those with security concerns.
If it’s not Ayodhya that’s worrying athletes, it’s the risk of contracting mosquito-borne dengue fever after over two-thousand cases were reported in Delhi. The fact that such illnesses are commonplace in India during the monsoon season has gone un-noticed, however it has still prompted some big name withdraws such as Geraint Thomas and Ben Swift from Team Sky.
Then if you add in the ridiculous decision of British Cycling to prevent its star riders from competing in order not to interfere with their preparation for the European Championships then many are right to dismiss the 2010 Commonwealth Games as a farce before it’s even begun. Politics aside, we’ll fight the corner for sport and preview the Games as her majesty’s empire comes together with one aim, Commonwealth Gold!
The 2010 Commonwealth Games will be all about the battle of the antipodeans with the spotlight falling on Australia and New Zealand as they look to dominate the Track Cycling events. Regardless of the results achieved in Delhi, each athlete will constantly be reminded by the media about the absence of Britain’s star riders such as Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton, however where the Australian team is concerned, whether the British team were out in force or not, they would still arguably come away with the same amount of medals, especially going off their amazing performances in the 2010 World Championships.
