Rain Cancels Good Friday, AgainOnce again unfortunately the weather got the better of the Meeting. Despite an optimistic start with some good times in the preliminary time trials, the weather closed in just before the one o’clock official start. By two o’clock the rain was still falling heavily and a number of riders had already packed their bags and left for home, the sky was completely overcast and the home straight was becoming one long puddle. The weather forecast was that the rain had settled in for the day so the officials decided the only sensible course of action was to reluctantly abandon the meeting. In truth, with no grand stand or other real cover to shelter in, the Velodrome quickly became a miserable place to be and it was amazing to see how quickly everyone vacated the site, leaving the various stallholders, and caterers to pack their unsold stock and think of what might have been. Although the sun did return to dry the track in the late afternoon the decision to abandon was the right one because although the track dried out, the track centre remained waterlogged and the grass and mud around the track remained lethally slippery for spectators. Everyone involved in the organisation of the meeting is extremely disappointed, not only at seeing the fruits of their labour being in vain, but for all the riders and spectators who had travelled from far and wide to be at what had promised to be a great meeting. Franco Marvulli told the organiser, Graham Bristow, that he was pleased to have been invited and had been looking forward to riding at Herne Hill in the famous Good Friday Meeting and hoped that he would be able to return next year. The Southern Counties CU would like to thank all of the sponsors and advertisers for their support for the meeting. Marvulli to Make Good Friday DebutMulti World Champion in Scratch and Madison, Six Days track star Franco Marvulli is coming to Good Friday for the first time. As well as looking to win the prestigious Golden Wheel 20k Scratch the Swiss Champion he is also aiming to take the honours in the British Pacing Association Derny Paced GP. Tough opposition will come from Endura’s Alex Blain who has had a fantastic ride in the recent Tour of Murcia. The Frenchman is no stranger to the track and is looking forward to riding at Herne Hill. Mallorquin Toni Tauler, Silver medallist in The Beijing Olympic Madison, returns to stake his claim to the Golden Wheel – he too has unfinished business from last year! Italian sprint star Roberto Chiappa returns to Herne Hill for The 2010 Good Friday Meeting on the 2nd of April 2010. Since retiring from the sport after the Beijing Olympics, Chiappa has been working with the Italian Sprint team in a part-time coaching role, however he has also found the time to continue training thanks to the new Montichiari Velodrome in Brescia, that will host the 2010 UCI Junior World Track Cycling Championships Chiappa has been a regular at this season's Revolution series in the UK which has helped him to hone his form ahead of Good Friday where he is looking forward to riding in the International Sprint which he won on his last visit in 2001. Paracycling tandem sprinting is featured at the Meeting for the first time in the history of Good Friday. The race gives a great opportunity for British tandem crews to compete against crews from Spain and Poland. Spanish Paralympic Coach Salva Cabeza is excited about the prospect of bringing his riders to the UK, commenting to Velodrome.org.uk, "It is good that we have the opportunity to race as their are not many events for Paralympic Cyclists, outside of our main targets such as the World Championships, World Cup and Paralympics". Hopefully Bristowevents.co.uk have signalled the start of a tandem events being re-incorporated into Track programmes for 2010. Another rider who will be present at Herne Hill will be Endura's Rob Hayles who will be looking to scoop the £1000 prize for winning the 20k Golden Wheel Scratch race. With an additional £1300 shared out amongst the minor placing this is the richest race on the UK Domestic Track Cycling calendar. Another innovative feature will be the Grand Old Ordinary One Mile Challenge Race which celebrates 100 years since it’s inception. Regularly held at Herne Hill in the past, it has recently been held at venues all over Britain. Phil Wray of the Veterans Cycle Club said “It’s great that the event is ‘coming home’ for it’s centenary and will be contested in front of a huge crowd of spectators”.
