Great Britain's gold medal haul at the Beijing Olympic Games was fully reflected in the annual sports awards presented by the Sports Journalists' Association at a glittering ceremonial lunch in the City of London.

Triple gold medallist Chris Hoy was named Sportsman of the Year for his victories in cycling. Double gold medallist swimmer Rebecca Adlington won the Sportswoman of the Year award which was presented to her by Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal, herself the winner of the same award in 1971 when she was an international equestrian competitor.

Hoy and Adlington finished top of a poll of the 600-plus members of the Sports Journalists' Association of Great Britain, made up of sports writers, broadcasters, photographers and sub-editors.

Hoy, 32, from Edinburgh, won gold in the individual sprint, the team sprint and the Keirin in the Beijing velodrome while Adlington, 19, from Mansfield, won the 400 metres freestyle gold and then, five days later, shattered a 19-year-old world record to win the 800m freestyle. She was the first woman swimmer to win two gold medals for Britain since 1960. Adlington has since had a swimming centre and bar in her home town Mansfield named after her.

Adlington came to London to receive her award which was given during the middle of lunch so that she could return to her training pool that same afternoon. Hoy, on holiday in Asia, sent a video message of thanks to the audience and the SJA.

Further success followed for the cycling team with the Great Britain team, who won 14 medals, including eight golds, in Beijing together with nine golds and two silvers at the world track championships staged in Manchester in March, were honoured as Sports Team of the Year.

Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton was runner-up to Hoy with three-time Olympic sailing gold medallist Ben Ainslie in third place.

Nicole Cooke, the Olympic road race champion who set the pace for Great Britain with a gold on the first weekend of competition in Beijing, was runner up to Adlington, and Christine Ohuruogu, who won Britain's only athletics gold medal in Beijing in the 400 m,was voted into third place.

The lunch, hosted by SJA president Sir Michael Parkinson, and sponsored by UK Sport and Sky Bet, marked the 60th anniversary of the Association, and in recognition of that a special presentation was made to Dorothy Tyler, who won a silver medal in the high jump at the last London Olympics in 1948 and also competed in the 1936 Games in Berlin. Tyler, now aged 88, was one of several veterans from the 1948 London Games - both competitors and retired sports journalists – who attended the event as special guests of the SJA.

Rebecca Romero Bex Romero, Olympic and World Champion

Many former Sportsmen and Sportswomen of the year, drawn from each decade of the Association's history, were among the 400-plus attending the event.

Other awards went to cyclists Nicole Cooke and Rebecca Romero, the latter the only British woman to win Olympic medals in two different sports, having won a rowing silver in Athens four years ago.

The Bill McGowran Trophy for the Disabled Sports Personality of the Year, went to Paralympic cyclist Darren Kenny, while the SJA President's Award went to the Great Britain coxless four, who won gold in Beijing.

Jason Kenny Jason Kenny - Olympic Champion

Best International Newcomer was the sprint cyclist Jason Kenny. Simon Clegg, the outgoing British Olympic Association chief executive and Britain's chef de mission at seven Olympic Games, was given the JL Manning Award for his Outstanding Contribution to Sport - past winners of which have included golfer Tony Jacklin, rugby coach Ian McGeechan, footballer Sir Bobby Charlton, rugby coach Clive Woodward and cycling manager Dave Brailsford.

Olympic cycling champion Chris Hoy has been named 2008 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The Scot, who won three gold medals in Beijing, beat Lewis Hamilton and Rebecca Adlington to the honour.

Hoy, 32, becomes the first cyclist to win the prestigious award since Tommy Simpson in 1965.

"To win this award this year is so special as British sport has enjoyed such a hugely successful year. It's been incredible," said Hoy.

He triumphed in the team sprint, along with Jamie Staff and Jason Kenny, and won the keirin and the individual sprint at the Laoshan Velodrome.

He also won two titles at the 2008 World Championships in Manchester.

It was a successful night for the British cycling team as they won the Team award while David Brailsford won the Coach of the Year crown.

"I really didn't expect this," added Hoy, who received a standing ovation after he came to the stage to collect his award from Sir Steve Redgrave and Michael Johnson.

Chris Hoy Chris Hoy - BBC Sports Personality of the Year

"After the year I've had and the whole team has had, to be crowned Sports Personality of the Year, it just means so much. This is the big one and this is just unbelievable.

"Standing here holding it in my hands, looking at the names on this trophy, it's quite incredible.

"This is unique. There is nothing like the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards. This is the big one, it's as good as it gets.

"It is a huge honour to be a Scottish winner. I remember Liz McColgan winning the World Championships in Tokyo in 1991 and seeing her win the award.

"She has been saying some nice things about me in the press and I thank her for that support.

"You think back to when you started off in the sport and now I am sitting here as Sports Personality of the Year, when I have sat and watched the programme all these years, it's crazy."

Formula One champion Hamilton, who was runner-up for the second year, always felt it would not be his year to win the BBC prize.

"In an Olympic year, I always thought an Olympian would win," said the 23-year-old Englishman.

"I was up against such amazing athletes and I was very proud to be standing up there with them."

Adlington, 19, who picked up two swimming golds in Beijing and in doing so became the first Briton to win a Olympic swimming title since 1988, paid tribute to Hoy.

"It was no surprise that Chris won the award," said the Mansfield athlete. "I turned round to my boyfriend and said that 'Chris is unbelievable'. I'm so happy for Chris - it's brilliant to see him win it."
