7th October 2010: The Memorial of Alexander Lesnikov took place at Russia’s Krylatskoe Velodrome in Moscow with a lower than normal entrant list producing some exciting racing. Moscow delighted the home crowd by opening up the three day event with victory in the Men’s Team Sprint courtesy of Sergey Kucherov, Denis Dmitriev and Sergey Borisov as they beat fellow Russians Valentin Savitskiy, Sergey Polynskiy and Pavel Jakushevskiy. Czech rider Adam Ptacnick beat Savitsky to win the Keirin before his team-mate Denis Spicka used the Krylatskoe Velodrome’s huge banking to clock a 200m Time Trial qualification time of 10.063s, making him the fastest qualifier. Russian’ Denis Shurshin was second fastest with a time of 10.186s, fractionally faster than Sergey Kucherov’s 10.196s. Spicka progressed through the rounds with ease, his only problem coming in the Semi-Final when he faced team-mate Tomas Babek. Despite Kilo specialist Babek’s greater speed endurance, Spicka kept the sprint slow and tactical, playing to his strengths so that he could make the final in 11.02s and 12.24s. In the other Semi-Final, second seed Denis Shurshin lost out to fellow Russian Pavel Jakushevskiy who had too much speed for his countryman and made the final in 10.94s and 11.27s Jakushevskiy pushed Spicka close in the final, but the sprint was always going to be all about the Czech rider as he took the victory in 10.82s and 10.83s. In the Women’s events, Junior World Champion Ekaterina Gnidenko riding in her Tula team colours with youngster Elena Brezhniva claimed the Women’s Team Sprint in a time of 47.477s, beating Gnidenko’s World Championship winning team-mate Anastasia Voynova and Alina Bondarenko by just over a second. Gnidenko then qualified fastest for the Sprint in a time of 11.661s, 0.83s faster than Voynova’s 11.744s with Anastasia Chulkova third in 11.903s. It was no surprise to see the talented young Junior World Champions progress easily to the final, where Gnidenko again demonstrated what a class act she is by winning in 12.13s and 12.80s. In her least favourite event, the Keirin, Ekaterina further demonstrated her talent as she completed a hat-trick of victories, pulling clear of Varvara Bojko to take another well earned win.
