Crampton Bags 15,000€ in JKA Keirin

Matt Crampton rounded off Great Britain's fourteen Gold Medal haul at the Manchester World Cup with victory in the JKA International Keirin, netting himself a cool 15,000€ in the process.

The rider who has often lived in the shadow of younger riders such as Jason Kenny and the emerging Dave Daniell has had his best year to date with four National titles and the European Keirin Title to add to his fantastic victory today

Crampton won the first round of the competition, beating Keirin specialist Kazunari Watanabe of Japan to progress through to the second round along with Michael D'Almeida and Teun Mulder from Heat Two and Ross Edgar and Jason Kenny from Heat Three.

The repechage saw Russia's Denis Dmitriev, World Keirin Bronze Medallist Christos Volikakis of Greece and Czech rider Adam Ptacnik make it back into the competition from heat one, with Shane Perkins, Denis Spicka and Andriy Vynokurov doing the same in heat two

The Second Round was delayed due to BBC running late with their coverage, but this didn't prevent the riders from giving the capacity crowd at Manchester Velodrome a fantastic show as Teun Mulder forced Jason Kenny onto the Cote d'Azur as he made his away to the front of the field. Kenny attempted to force his was back onto the track, throwing in a few head buts before realising he was out of the running as the field started to pull away

Coming into the home straight Mulder was clear and the victory was secure with Matt Crampton sneaking through on the inside to take second from a traditionally fast finishing Ross Edgar

Shane Perkins
Perkins showed how much he has impoved over summer

Commissaires then proceeded to relegate Mulder for forcing Kenny out of the Sprinters lane and onto the Cote d'Azur, a fair decision if the event was run under UCI rules, but very harsh when you consider the fact that the event was a JKA International Keirin where such a move is nothing compared with what goes on in Japan!

In the Second Round Shane Perkins lead from the front before France's D'Almeida took control and stormed to the victory with Perkins in second and Volikakis taking third, Japan's Watanabe was relegated for 'dangerous riding' after attempting to force D'Almeida from second inline behind the derny, in a decision that was again considered a bit harsh when the event was badged as JKA

With 4,000€ on offer for the winner of the minor final, all was not lost for Jason Kenny as he got revenge on Teun Mulder by taking the victory ahead of Ukrainian Andriy Vynokurov only for the pair to be relegated for passing the Derny prior to it leaving the track, handing the money to Mulder

The final was again eagerly anticipated, not just because the BBC were running late, but due to the star names on the start line, all of whom had a fantastic pedigree for Keirin racing

Pre-event favourite Ross Edgar, who was fresh from a financially rewarding trip to the JKA Keirin Series in Japan forced his was to the front from the start to take the bike ahead of Shane Perkins.

As the Derny left the track Crampton unleashed a huge attack only to be switched up the track by D'Almeida and forced to sit in the bunch and wait for another opportunity. This worked in Crampton's favour as his early attack probably would not have allowed him to hold on for the victory, unlike his charge on the final lap to hold off the field and take the 15,000€ from Edgar and an impressive Adam Ptacnik of the Czech Republic

World Champions Great Britain lined up for the Team Pursuit with a new line-up consisting of Jo Rowsell, Points and Scratch race winner Lizzie Armitstead and Katie Colclough

The team, riding in 100%ME colours with the exception of Rowsell who in her World Champion kit, easily topped Qualification by a massive five seconds from the Germans, recording a time of 3m 29.863s to the German effort of 3m 34.394s

It was no surprise to see the British team take the Gold medal from a German team that fell apart during the 3km race to finish six seconds behind Rowsell, Armitstead and Colclough who recorded a time of 3m 26.904s, the forth fastest time ever for the Women's Team Pursuit

Men's Madison

Just like in the Beijing Olympics the British team, this time containing Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas, were marked out of the Madison as the six day superstars took control

German's Olaf Pollack and Roger Kluge were the stars of the race, lapping the field with the Belgians, Russians and Olympic Champion's Argentina, but it was Pollack and Kluge that amassed the greatest number of points to take the Gold medal on 12pts from Belgium and Russia

An exhausted Wiggins and Thomas finished down in sixth place, with nine points which would have given them the Silver medal had they been on the same lap as the top four teams

Results

1. Germany (Olaf Pollack, Roger Kluge) - 1 Lap/12pts

2. Belgium (Iljo Keisse, Kenny De Ketele) - 1 Lap/8pts

3. Russia (Ivan Kovalev, Sergey Kolesnikov) - 1 Lap/7pts

Men's Team sprint

With all their big rivals absent from Manchester, the British trio of Jamie Staff, Jason Kenny and Ross Edgar, riding as Sky HD+ dominated the Team Sprint, easily qualifying fastest in 44.156s, which was over a second faster than second placed Poland who clocked 45.185s

The British trio moved confidently into the final where as expected they took yet another Gold medal for Britain, this time finishing in 44.306s, with Poland still over a second behind

Bronze went to the German trio of Sebastian Doehrer, Rene Enders and Matthias Stumpf who beat the French US Creteil team, consisting of Charlie Conord, Michael D'Almeida and Thierry Jollet

Women's Keirin

The Women's Keirin bought another victory for Victoria Pendleton who stamped home her authority in an event that she is eager to reclaim the World title that she lost in March this year to American Jennie Reed.

Round One saw Vicki easily progress with China's Jinjie Gong as the pair forced German Miriam Welte into the repechage, Jess Varnish shocked the crowd with victory in heat two, progressing to the next round with Victoria Baranova of Russia, forcing Christin Muche (Germany) and Columbia's Diana Maria Garcia Orrego into the repechage

Anna Blyth
Anna Blyth rode superbly in the Keirin

Anna Blyth also claimed victory in her heat, making it a clean sweap for the British in Round One

Round Two saw Pendleton stamp home her authority to reach the final ahead of Garcia Orrego, who had made it back into the competition via the repechage and Canadian youngster Monique Sullivan, with Jess Varnish coming in last. Anna Blyth also made the final after finishing second in her heat behind Jinjie Gong.

The final saw a great battle between the British and the other four riders as Blyth launched a trademark attack from the back as the Derny left the track to hit the front with two laps to go. Pendleton did her best to help her team-mate out by stalling the opposition but Anna couldn't quite hold on and faded in the home straight to slip to fifth as Pendleton took the victory from Garcia Orrego and Gong

2. Diana Maria Garcia Orrego (Col)

3. Jinjie Gong (Chn)
