Start of a New Era for Team Pursuit1st November 2009: Great Britain's Olympic Champion Team Pursuit squad dominated the Team Pursuit at the Manchester World Cup today narrowly missing out on the World Record time that they sent when winning Gold in Beijing back in August 2008 Qualification saw the Spanish quartet of Sergi Escobar, Toni Tauler, Eloy Teruel and David Muntaner take an early lead with a time of 4m 08.744s but with the Danish World Champions and British Olympic Champions still left to ride they didn't hold much hope of reaching the final Luckily for the Spanish the Danes could only record a time of 4m 09.826s which guaranteed them a place in the final, however as Ed Clancy, Geraint Thomas, Ben Swift and Steve Burke stormed around Manchester Velodrome in a time of 3m 57.709s the eleven second difference in-between first and second was quite frankly frightening After Beijing the British Team Pursuit squad were forcing to undergo a re-structuring with Paul Manning retiring to concentrate on overseeing the development work at the London Olympic Velodrome for 2012 and now working in the BC coaching staff. In addition Bradley Wiggins concentrated his efforts on the road to great affect, finishing fourth in the Tour de France Consequently British Cycling experimented with new riders and put in a disappointing performance at the Pruszkow World Championships which saw them fail to medal for the first time in ten years But as with all re-structuring work things take time to come together and the new quarter of Clancy, Thomas, Burke and Swift who was replaced by Andy Tennant for the final are surely going to achieve bigger and better things than the Team Pursuit squads Britain has presented in the past Evidence of this can be found in the final where after catching the Spanish at half distance they continued there ride to clock an amazing time of 3m 54.395s, one second slower than there World Record performance set in 'Olympic Mode' back in Beijing last year Men's Team Pursuit Results 1.
