Great Britain announce formidable team for World Cup

GB Team
The GB team get ready for World Cup action at Manchester Velodrome

British riders will be out in strength for the finale of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup when it arrives in Manchester 23-25th February.

The GB team entrants include Olympic Champions Chris Hoy and Bradley Wiggins and the registered trade teams of Science in Sport and 100% ME have entered talented teams including former world women’s sprint champion Victoria Pendleton.

The largest British contingent ever fielded in a World Cup event will be swelled by the entry of the Plowman Craven / Evans Cycles racing team confirmed by team logistics manager Gary Beckett today. Their entry is spearheaded by former world championship silver and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Tony Gibb with other team riders to be confirmed shortly.

The fierce competition between rival British teams will provide a nail biting spectacle.  Wendy Houvenhagel and Rebecca Romero have already provided a close encounter when Houvenhagel narrowly defeated Romero in the final of the women’s 3,000m individual pursuit in Moscow by just 0.015 sec.  Houvenhagel tops the world cup table for the women’s individual pursuit going into the last event.

Talented youngster Jason Kenny will be looking to lead the SIS men’s team sprinters to victory over the GB boys in an event only a few miles from his home town of Bolton no doubt spurred on by a large crowd of local supporters and family. Kenny reaches the key event trying to further impress the GB team selectors for the forthcoming world championships after he won three gold medals in the junior track worlds.

The 100% ME team are expected to ride in all the bunched events. British National Junior Road Race champion Russell Hampton will be encouraged by his gold medal win in the scratch race in Los Angeles last month and whilst his young team may lack the big race experience it is amply balanced by their fearless racing style.

Anna Blyth and Shanaze Reade will be the first British team to contest the women’s team sprint on Saturday night. The pair provide diverse backgrounds with Blyth an experienced track sprinter and Reade moving over to track racing from BMX.

Wiggins’s appearance in the men’s individual pursuit on Friday will follow key preparation at the Newport track and the Cofidis professional will be among the favourites for victory.
