2nd September 2010: The final night of the 2010 Newcastle-under-Lyme Track League was contested in warm conditions at the Lyme Valley Stadium, Staffordshire which was a pleasant change after the last three weeks were rained off.

With the nights drawing in the floodlights were switched on which added to the atmosphere in what turned out to be a great nights racing. A good turnout of 48 riders in the main league and 15 Freewheelers ensured that all categories were hotly contested.

The A Class events saw a field of 22 riders with some of the best racing witnessed in this category this season. The final round of the Keirin League saw Kian Emadi, Tunstall Wheelers, who was just back from the Junior Nationals where he had won the Keirin and Kilometre title, win in fine style from a field of 9 riders who had made it through the heats to the final. Close in second place was Tom Powell, Newcastle RC 2001, who sealed the overall title for the first time. In third place was 2009 League winner Andrew Magnier, Cycle Premier RT. Andrew was making his first appearance this year after the rained off weeks delayed his return.

Andrew Magnier showed a master class in the other events as he won in commanding style the Devil, Win and Out and the Final 10 mile scratch. This final event saw a fantastic pace set throughout with only the pace dropping in the last 10 laps as the cat and mouse started. In second place was Oliver Davies, Dinnington RC , who rode superbly to hold on to Andrew until the last lap. Third place went to veteran Steve Clayton, Planet X who showed that his form is coming for next months World Masters Championships in Portugal. The finishing time was 21.07.

The other A class event, the unknown Distance, went to Matthew Rotherham who despite feeling tired after a long day at Alton Towers attacked off the front just before the bell was rung and he managed to hold off the fast finishing group of riders led by Andrew Magnier.

The B Class events saw a good turnout of riders and they also produced some close racing. The top points scorer was Joe Evans, Newcastle RC 2001 who rode some great races on the night. He won the devil and win and out event along with taking second places in the unknown distance and 10 mile scratch. Sam Birchall, Lyme RC won the final ten mile event were he finished in forth place and the first finisher in the B Class events. Sam also too a second place in the win and out. Other wins in this category came from Neil Cummins in the unknown distance which ensured that he finished third in the overall league.

The successful youth events came to a season close with 14 riders competing. This years champion is Joel Partington, Lyme RC who had a quiet night with only a second place finish. Will Thomas, Sportcity Velo took wins in the devil and the 6 lap scratch as well as being a member of the winning team sprint event. Louis Preston, Lyme RC won the other event in the block handicap.

There was also a ladies Scratch event with five riders taking part. In a sprint finish first year rider Lauren Quenby of Newcastle RC 2001 held off the fast finishing Lisa Daley and Beth Clayton. Consolation for Lisa was that she had won the Ladies Trophy for 2010.

The last night of the Freewheelers league saw another good turnout with all riders putting in some great performances. At the end of the 12 race programme the top point’s scorers in each league were as follows;

Group 1 Joel Partington Lyme RC
Group 2 James Duncalf Lyme RC
Bradley Hill
Group 3 Isabel Mellor

The organising committee would like to thank all the riders for supporting this year’s races which has been the best for 20 years in terms of numbers and racing speed. The organiser Chris Pyatt would also like to thank his team of supporting officials in enabling this year’s events to pass off in a smooth and efficient manner. A date for everyone’s diary is the 28th April 2011 when the 2011 season starts. See you then
