Llaneras Héroe de Oro de Mallorca

Spain's Joan Llaneras has cemented his place in cycling history as the greatest Points race rider of all time after he dominated the Olympics Points race at Laoshan Velodrome in Beijing to take his second Olympic title

Reading every move like a hawk, Llaneras used all his years of experience to pull off the ride of his life to take the Gold medal from German Roger Kluge and Britain's Chris Newton

The rider who hails from Mallorca in the Balearic Islands will now retire from the sport after collecting four World Championship titles and the Sydney Olympic title aswell as Silver in Athens

Llaneras will now move into a role as Technical Director within Balearic Cycling, where he will assist in the development of Spanish youngsters, with the aim of continuing the nations dominance of the endurance events (Spanish riders have won the Tour de France for the last three years and Sammuel Sanchez took the Gold in the Beijing Olympics Road Race)

With multiple attacks throughout the race, Llaneras was able to lap the field with Britain's Chris Newton and overtake early leader Roger Kluge to gain control of the race

Joan then simply sat in the bunch increasing his points total with every sprint to do enough to secure victory with ten laps remaining
