McGlynn/Hunter Smash WR to Grab Gold

Great Britain cyclist Aileen McGlynn smashed the 3km pursuit world record to grab gold on day two of the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester.

The Glasgow-based star – piloted by Ellen Hunter - shaved the world record by just 700 hundredths of a second off the previous time, clocking 3.36.752 seconds.

And McGlynn, who scooped gold in the 1km tandem on Thursday, insisted she didn’t believe she was capable of beating the record.

“We are very surprised,” said the 34-year-old world champion. “We didn’t think we would break a world record.

“We did no specific training for the ride, we were just told by the coach to go out and ride it and fortunately it paid off for us.”

GB team-mate Sarah Storey followed up her world record in qualifying with gold in the final of the LC1/LC2/CP4 category 3km pursuit.

The four time Paralympian clocked 3.46.168 minutes in the morning session to qualify for the final against China’s Ju Fang Zhou.

And the former swimmer sealed her spot on the podium when she caught Zhou before the finish.
“The race this morning went really well,” said Storey.

“It was a very controlled pace and I just wanted to make sure I was in charge for this afternoon’s final.

“I have been threatening to ride quicker than the world record in training and there is hopefully there is still more to come.”

Meanwhile team GB rounded the day off with another gold as the trio of Darren Kenny, Mark Bristow and Jody Cundy fought off a spirited Chinese performance to cross the finish line first in a new world record time of 49.958.
