
Britain Bounce Back!![]() Day Two of the Sydney World Cup saw the Great British Track Cycling Team bounce back after yesterdays disappointment to take two golds Men's 4km Team Pursuit In the Men's Team Pursuit, the British team of Ed Clancy, Steve Cummings, Chris Newton and Bradley Wiggins qualified fastest in a time of 4m 04.160s to move into the final against the New Zealand quartet of Sam Bewley, Westley Gough, Marc Ryan and Jesse Sergent, who qualified in 4m 05.976s As usual, GB saved their best for the final, and stormed round in a fantastic time of 4m 01.196s to easily beat New Zealand by three seconds ![]() Team Pursuit Gold for GB Team Toshiba, who consisted of Jack Bobridge, Peter Dawson, Zak Dempster and Mark Jamieson took the Bronze medal in 4m 03.248s, beating the Netherlands by four seconds Last year's World Cup winners Russia trailed home in fifth place Men's Keirin Britain's second Gold of the day came courtesy of World Keirin Champion Chris Hoy, who headed up a one-two with team-mate Ross Edgar in the Keirin Chris easily won his first round heat, forcing French powerhouse Gregory Bauge and Spain's Itmar Esteban into the repechage. Edgar also easily progressed into the Semi's beating German Carsten Bergmann and Czech rider Denis Spicka In the second round Hoy again claimed victory, beating an impressive Josiah Ng and Andriy Vynokurov, and in the process knocking Stefan Nimke and Michael Bourgain out of the competition ![]() Keirin Silver for Ross Edgar Ross had a tough second round draw, facing the mighty Theo Bos, but he still managed to grab third place behind Theo and Roberto Chiappa to make the final In the final, Hoy produced a dominant performance to take the victory from Edgar who just did enough to hold off Theo Bos on the line and make it a dream result for the British camp. Vynokurov took fourth, ahead of Chiappa in 5th with Ng coming in a respectable 6th Shane Kelly took the 7th-12th Final from Bourgain and Nimke ![]() Yet again Anna Meares dominated the 500m TT Women's 500m TT In the Women's 500m TT, Australia's Anna Meares again showed why she is the queen of this event when she stormed round the Dunc Gray Velodrome in 33.869s, 0.3s outside her World Record, but still easily beating Lisandra Guerra who recorded a time of 34.058s Willy Kanis again showed how much hard work she has been putting over the summer as she took the Bronze medal in 34.141s Britain's Anna Blyth finished seventh after recording a time of 34.979s Women's Team Sprint Scheduled in the same session as the 500m TT was the Women's Team Sprint, but even though Bronze medallist Willy Kanis was riding both events, this did not stop her and Yvonne Hijgenaar taking the Gold Medal for the Netherlands in 33.958s ![]() Willy Kanis and Yvonne Hijgenaar take the Women's TS Interestingly Anna Meares' winning time in the 500m TT was 0.1s faster than the winning Team Sprint time, despite the Team Sprint being completed over the same distance by two riders!! The silver medal went to Anna's sister Kerrie who partnered Kaarle McCulloch for Australia to record 34.759s. Bronze went to France's Sandie Clair and Virgine Cueff Women's 20km Points Race In the Women's 20km Points race Italy's Giorgia Bronzini took the Gold medal after riding a tactically astute race to beat China's Yan Li by a single point. Czech rider Jarmila Machacova took the Bronze Men's 15km Scratch Race In the Men's 15km Scratch race, Roger Kluge, Zach Bell and Milan Kadlec lapped the field to ensure themselves of a medal, with Kluge beating Bell and Kadlec to the Gold. Britain's Ben Swift finished down in 17th place Men's 1km TT France's Michael D'Almeida took Gold in the Men's Kilometre Time Trial in a time of 1m 02.588s. In an event that featured some new names, perhaps due to it's withdrawal from Olympic competition, China's Hao Li Wen took the Silver in 1m 03.575s with Ukraine's Yevgen Bolibrukh securing the Bronze medal in a time of 1m 03.629s |
