The Winterton Show

Winteron

The sun shone all around for the Winterton show grass track meeting organised by Scunthorpe Poly CC.

The riders were few in quantity with a lot of the riders opting to watch the Tour De France in London, however there was certainly quality in the riding.

The first event was the national short distance endurance series, with last years winner Neith Withington looking to regain his title along with the joint current leader of this year Adam Duggleby.  Adam was like the rest of the riders frustrated with the recent weather in the area and was looking forward to a work out. He and Neil easily made their way through the first round along with Jason Benham, John McClelland, Richard Lambert and Bryan Pool. The rest of the riders had to make their way through the repecharges with Leigh Haigh showing his grass track experience to ease into the final along with Matthew Fenton.

The final was a close fought affair with no one wanting to lead the race on, John McClelland was fed up of the first 100m easy pace and attacked in the back straight, Adam Duggleby was onto his wheel with Neil Withington boxing him in.  The race stayed steady for the next lap and with a lap to go everyone was jostling for a place at the front.  Richard Lambert then took it on himself to have a go but it ended with John McClelland showing his strength going into the final two bends shoulders locked with Neil Withington, it was neck and neck into the home straight with Neil just getting the verdict from John, Adam eventually got out of the box and went on to take 3rd place from Richard Lambert in 4th.  Neil then took over the custody of the Winterton Cup from last year’s winner John McClelland.

The youth event saw three riders making their debuts at Winterton Show, brothers Jamie and Callum Rogers riding for Scunthorpe Poly and Bradley Burliegh – Doncaster wheelers.  The first event was a two lap time trial with Jamie winning from Callum then Bradley.

The youngsters being told what their instructions are by a former grass track national champion Michael Boreman.

The next youth event was a handicapped 3 lap race with Jamie getting the verdict from Bradley and then Callum.

The last event for the youths was a paced handicap 2 lap race.  Senior riders Nicholas Gordon, Roger Barton and Dave Park volunteered to pace the youngsters around the track, it was like watching three tandems go around Winterton showground.  With the win going to Callum Rogers followed by Bradley Burleigh then Jamie Rogers.

This meant the winner of the juvenile omnium went to Jamie Rogers with Callum in second place and Bradley in third. All riders went home suitably tired and vowed to be back again next year.

The next senior event was a devil takes the hindemost for which was run off at a rapid pace with Adam Duggleby leading from the front.  The wind was making the conditions hard for the riders with it hitting them in the final corner and down the home straight but Adam proved his strength training had paid off with a superb win over John McClelland and Bryan Pool who was making his debut on the Winterton track, with Richard Lambert taking his 2nd 4th place of the day.

The course de primes saw a few riders take home lap prizes, Jamie Rogers, Leigh Haigh, Bryan Pool, Neil Withington, Roger Barton and Gavin Daley all picking up prizes.

The last event was the national series endurance league held over 30 laps. This showed Richard Lambert attacking from the gun and taking the race to the rest of the riders, Leigh Haigh responded along with Adam Duggleby and Jason Benham. This was to stay the break away riders for the next few laps then Adam took the race into his own hands, he attacked leaving no one able to hold his wheel, with a group of 5 riders nearly a lap down with no reply.  Adam then stayed at the back of the bunch for the next 10laps to the end.  He went onto to take a well-deserved win in front of an appreciative crowd.  The sprint for second showed John McClelland take it from Bryan Pool and Gavin Daley taking a well deserved 4th place.

The Winterton show committee enjoyed the racing that took place today and the weather held out superbly for a grand day of grass track racing.  Hopefully we will see more riders turn out next year.

Hopefully the fortunes have turned on North Lincolnshire and we now have racing commencing again after the terrible weather conditions of recent weeks.  If today’s racing was anything to go by the next few weeks will be thrilling racing.
