Superb Krupeckaite Claims Keirin28th March 2010: Lithuanian Simona Krupeckaite who is sponsored by Velodromeshop.org.uk stormed clear of the field in the Women's Keirin to claim the World title from a fast finishing Victoria Pendleton on the final day of the 2010 UCI Track Cycling World Championships at Ballerup Super Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark. Round One of the Keirin saw some though heats in which four of the favourites were drawn in the same heat. Krupeckaite, Australia Anna Meares, Willy Kanis of the Netherlands and Belarus' Olga Panarina did battle in heat three and it was Simona and Anna that made it directly through to Round Two, avoiding the repechage, to join Australian Emily Rosemund, defending World Champion Shuang Guo of China, Britain's Victoria Pendleton and Clara Sanchez of France. Luckily for Kanis and Panarina they made it back into the competition via the repechage, along with Canada's Monique Sullivan, who has continued to improve this season to become another exciting prospect for the Canadians. Also back were 2005 World Champion Christin Muche and Miriam Welte of Germany with Australian Kaarle McCulloch who had recovered from her injury sustained in the Sprint Semi-Finals. Looking back on the same form that saw her claim the World title way back in 2004, France's Clara Sanchez dominated the first heat in Round Two, powering across the line in first place ahead of Krupeckaite and Panarina to make the final at the expense of Rosemond, Sullivan and Muche. The second Round Two encounter was another all-star battle, featuring Guo, Meares, Pendleton, Kanis, McCulloch and Miriam Welte. Those six riders could easily make up a final anyday, however only three would be able to go for Gold this year. Another rider back on form in the style of a previous World title win was Pendleton who finally rode in a style that represented her countless titles as she went through to the final with McCulloch and Welte, with defending champion Guo saying goodbye to the competition with Meares and Kanis. The 7th-12th Minor Final is usually just a formality with riders not really interested in fighting for the minor placings when all are really thinking about is how they would much rather be watching and waiting for the final a few moments later. In an incredible display of teamwork, only previously seen with Sir Chris Hoy and Ross Edgar in the Men's events, Emily Rosemond held off the field in impressive style for a rider who is so young and inexperienced as her five time World Championship winning team-mate Anna Meares blasted clear to take the victory. Rosemond held on for a well deserved second place for becoming the victim of yet another ridiculous decision by commissaires for 'not holding her line'. All the young Australian did was basically a carbon-copy (not those dodgy Taiwanese products) of the legendary tactics of Ross Edgar to help Meares ease to the victory, Hoy, Edgar and the British team have done this for years with no problems however when the Australian's try it suddenly it's not allowed. In another fantastic race the final producing a truly classic encounter between Krupeckaite and Pendleton. The British rider hit the front as soon as the Derny swung off with Krupeckaite glued to her wheel, Simona quickly moved round Pendleton to hit the front and increase the pace and all Pendleton could to was watch as the Lithuania kept her on her hip until the line to become World Champion. Taking her second Bronze medal of the Championships was the Belarusian Olga Panarina in an incredibly tight dip for the line with Aussie McCulloch 2010 UCI World Track Cycling Championships Women's Keirin Results 1.
